A Brockton man forced two escorts he met through the Craigslist website to strip at gunpoint before robbing them of their cash and possessions, police said. Emanuel Gomes, who said the robberies easily could have ended the same way — with one of the victims dead.
Henderson faces two counts of armed robbery, two counts of kidnapping while armed, larceny of a motor vehicle and witness intimidation. Authorities said the woman apparently was killed in Boston when she fought back during the robbery.
Markoff is also accused of robbing other escorts he met through Craigslist. Brockton police began investigating the recent robberies of escorts in the city July 9, after a naked woman was seen screaming for help one afternoon in the Main and Union streets area. The woman told police she posted an ad on Craigslist, offering sex for a fee, and was contacted by a man who told her to meet him at 31 Arch St. When she went there, the suspect pulled a gun from his waistband, ordered her to strip naked and demanded money, Gomes said.
The woman told him the cash was in her car and, when he went outside, she ran from the house. A month later, on Aug. She told police she met the man at an Arch Street house. One of the women told police that after she had been robbed, the suspect answered a second ad she had placed on Craigslist. He asked her to meet him on Arch Street, but later called her back, saying he saw her talking to the police on the street.
He then hung up. Detective Ernest Bell said investigators had staked out the Arch Street area, believing the suspect lived nearby, and later asked him to come to the police station to talk with officers. The victims, in the meantime, identified the suspect in a photo array.
He was then placed under arrest. The investigation into the robberies spanned a month, with both uniformed officers and detectives involved in the probe. Thomas Lafratta, Sgt. Maureen Boyle can be reached at mboyle enterprisenews.
